Ask a local to sum up the smell of Melbourne and you will get cracks about the odour of the perpetually brown Yarra River or the penetrating scent of steaming meat pies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
What you’re missing out on is coconut cotton, fresh cucumber and dense cedar but Mihan Aromatics is ushering in the scented winds of change with a capsule collection of fragrances to match any personality, from blissed out fiancée to meddlesome mother-in-law.
Founded by Jules and Joshua Mihan, the sleek chic label is doing its best to bring personality to perfume.
"We have both have been intrigued with aromas and smells since we were kids," Joshua says. "Then when we were in London I helped to create a cologne range for a perfumery and developed a real passion for scents. Coming back to Melbourne I knew what needed to be done."
The result is three intriguing scents that would be equally as home in Monaco, Manila, Michigan or Melbourne. Mikado Bark, Sienna Brume and Guilty Story all pack a unique punch
"We source the best ingredients from all over the world including Australian Sandalwood, Calabrian Bergamot and Sri Lankan Cinnamon," Joshua says.
"Mihan Aromatics is designed and developed in Melbourne where we create the parfum, fill the bottles and package it with our own hands. Mihan Aromatics is a true product of Australia and definitely has a strong Melbourne sense of style and aesthetic."
The power of smell to tap into feelings of nostalgia has helped Joshua and Jules align the aromatics with personality types.
"The sense of emotion and feeling that goes through the brand is what we feel a true scent is about,” Joshua says. “It’s like when you start a fire and the smell of the embers takes you back to a place from your childhood. Sienna Brume with its subtle hints of summer instantly reminds you of sitting by a pool and day dreaming while reading your favourite magazine."
More fragrances are on the way with the couple currently in the laboratory working on their next scent.
"The biggest challenge while creating fragrances is to stay on track as you can very easily get lost in the sea of smells and float away but the most exciting fragrance at the moment is the one we are working on.
"It's a very sophisticated smell which is made up of 100 per cent Australian botanicals."
For potential grooms, however, there's no need to wait with Joshua steering men towards Guilty Story. "I would pick Guilty Story. It’s a bit irresponsible and lustful, like me…"
