Leading Australian jeweller Nicola Cerrone has worked with Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and Rihanna but now the family man has men on his mind.
A winner of the prestigious De Beers International Diamonds Award, considered by many as the Oscars of jewellery, Cerrone has been adding sparkle to the lives of Australians for more than 45 years and now has a growing men's collections along with a thriving bespoke business.
Along with the charm that comes from growing up in Lanciano in Italy, before moving to Australia when he was 12-years-old, Cerrone has plenty of practical advice on creating pieces that will stand the test of time.
Cerrone jewellery house was founded in 1972.
Diamonds are a girl's best friend. What are men drawn to?
We are seeing more requests for rose gold, especially set with black diamonds or champagne diamonds.
How do you get started creating your own piece?
Increasingly we are seeing more demand from male customers who are looking for unique and bespoke pieces that reflect their personal style.
Customers can call or come into one of our Sydney or Melbourne boutiques to speak with our specialised staff. Most people have some sort of design in mind. With Instagram and Pinterest, people tend to research different styles before they see us.
A men's ring, which is set with diamonds takes an average 24-30 man-made hours.
Cerrone 18ct white gold pave set with round brilliant cut diamonds with a black rhodium finish $9,800.00.
If they have not seen something but have a design in mind our consultants can work with them and provide sketches. Once our client is happy with the design, the concept is sent to the workshop to be handcrafted.
Craftsmanship forms the heart of our business; the Cerrone workshop is the largest handcrafted jewellery workshop in Australia and we have more than 30 artisans with their own specific skill-set which forms part of the design process.
How else can potential grooms prepare?
We recommend that you have a budget in mind. The process of bespoke doesn’t have to be unattainable and if you see a good jeweller, they will help guide you on this.
I can't stress enough the importance of going to a credible and good quality jeweller. Go and see them, visit their workshop. Your jeweller should be like your GP, your dentist or your accountant – someone you can trust.
Cerrone 18ct yellow and white gold drop set with baguette cut diamonds $8,600.00.
How long does the process take?
A men's ring, which is set with diamonds, takes an average 24-30 man-made hours. The reason being that a woman's ring generally features one large stone and some smaller stones, whereas a man's ring usually consists of quite a few smaller stones.
This fluctuates depending on the materials used or complexities of design, but from the design decision to the finished ring we like to allow approximately two weeks.
There is nothing quite like bespoke as it is unique to the wearer.
Should you surprise your partner?
We find that most couples like to work on the design together – however we also have customers who like the element of surprise for their partner and design the ring in secret.
It is really up to the individuals.
