Men of Steel

Adam Niewand + Joshua Michael

13th August 2018

Laughter through tears is the favourite emotion of newly-married couple Adam and Joshua Niewand. It’s also the favourite line of most people who have wept through countless re-runs of Steel Magnolias, which helps explain the couple's unique grooms' cake.

In a celebration packed with personal touches, embracing tradition while gently bending it at the same time, the couple commissioned The Sugar Kitchen to recreate the armadillo grooms’ cake referenced in the cry-fest.

"It was a red velvet sponge in the shape of a giant armadillo with grey icing," Adam says.

"Anyone who remembers the movie Steel Magnolias should get the joke and if you don’t you should watch the movie."

Such detail, along with reuniting a noughties girl group, a tribute to George Michael and menu to rival any top restaurant, might have something to do with Adam’s experience pulling together extraordinary events for Mister Milford. Or perhaps it’s just love.

"I would rather have 30 minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special," Julia Roberts as Shelby says in Steel Magnolias. Adam and Joshua’s wonderful has lasted much longer.

"She took time to get to know us, asked great questions and from that crafted a beautifully funny and loving ceremony."

Location

Villa Vivante, Coffs Harbour NSW

We chose this private residence for our big day for its sweeping views of the Coffs Coast. We held the ceremony on the larger balcony upstairs after which the guests could descend downstairs to the outdoor terrace for the start of reception before moving inside for the sit-down dinner and formalities.

Suits

The Bespoke Corner,Paddington, NSW.

"We chose inverted colours of black and navy from each other so as not to be too matchy-matchy. The boys at Bespoke Corner have great attention to detail and make the experience truly wonderful. We had custom lining, our initials under the collar and other personal touches that made them special to us. They made our bow ties and shirts for the day as well."

Shoes

Custom Patent Leather Shoes in navy & black from Undandy with our initials and wedding date engraved in the sole.

Great for guys with larger feet – Sizes run to 14.5 US

Rings

Adams engagement ring is a platinum eternity band with alternating sapphire and diamond stones from the team at Moi Moi Jewellery in the Queen Victoria Building.

"Our platinum wedding bands are from Mondial by Nadia Neuman in the Strand Arcade, Sydney with our wedding date engraved in them."

Fragrance

Adam: Valentino Uomo. Josh: Chanel Bleu

Wedding party

"Not conforming to any standard format of a wedding party. Adam’s Grooms Party had two maids of honour, Trudi Ray and Felicity Armstrong and two best men, Jordan Bradley and Samuel Kitchen. Josh stuck to one of each, Geoff Williams for best man and Trudi Tuckwell as maid of honour."

"The guests did not leave the dance floor for three hours. Plus a sensational performance of their S2S hit What’s a Girl to Do to finish off the evening."

Music

"Music at the ceremony and reception was managed by ARIA award-winning singer/songwriter Sharon Muscat. Sharon joined her sister Christine, better known as '90s pop group Sister2Sister, for a gorgeous acoustic set to welcome guests on arrival and through the ceremony.

"The duo expanded to a funky DJ band for the reception with a guitarist, percussionist, saxophonist and DJ."

Celebrant

"Kristie Wilkinson was a highlight of the day. She took time to get to know us, asked great questions and from that crafted a beautifully funny and loving ceremony."

Guests

All our beautiful friends came far and wide from all corners of the globe and theatre and cabaret super star Trevor Ashley.

Menu

"The food and beverage for us was the most important aspect of the day."

After the ceremony there was a seafood station with freshly shucked oysters and peeled prawns and a grazing table featuring locally-sourced artisan cheeses.

The seated meal was served with share plates including dukkah lamb rack, crispy skin duck breast and grilled cod on citrus beurre blanc.

In the wee hours a ham station with rolls and all the accompaniments was set up for guests.

Instead of a first dance Adam surprised Josh by taking the mike and serenading him with a performance of Father Figure by George Michael.
